Madiba Poem

Madiba Poem

Gandhi said:

“Be the change you wish to see in the world.”
Madiba was that change
Viktor Frankl said:
“no longer able to change a situation we are challenged to change ourselves”
Madiba changed himself

and Frankl said:
“to choose one’s attitude in any given set of circumstances (is) to choose one’s own way”
Madiba chose his own way

In prison he chose freedom
turned captivity into a university the seat of humanity
turned bitter-hatred into forgiving-love
“I came to accept I have no right whatsoever to judge others
in terms of my own customs.”

in prison having chosen freedom
he chose to negotiate with apartheid
the freedom of the nation
freedom for all including those
whose racist fears had incarcerated
the whole country in rabid inhumanity

from his prison cell
he offered the freedom of loving forgiveness and overcame the violence of fear

Madiba was the future in the present
so we lost him.
