The Ninth World Hindi Conference was held.
It was held in Johannesburg, South Africa from 22-24 September 2012. The Ministry of External Affairs, with the support of the Hindi Shiksha Sang Africa (in particular, the Gauteng Branch) hosted the event.
The main theme of the conference was “Basha ki Asmita aur Hindi ka vaishvik sandarbh” – in other words, ‘Hindi as a global language and its relevance in a global context’. In addition to the plenary session, the conference also hosted an academic session focussing on a wide range of challenges and opportunities that the language faces. Relevant to the South African context, one of the sessions reflected on the teaching and sustaining of the language in the Indian diaspora.
The conference was inaugurated by the Honourable Pravin Gordhan, Minister of Finance (South Africa) and presided over by the Honourable Minister for State for External Affairs Smt. Preneet Kaur (India).
