While in His physical body His Holiness Bhagavan Swami Shivanandaji Maharaj, the founder of the Divine Life Society, Rishikesh, India always used to advise everybody that Namapathy’ is the most reliable and harmless form of ‘Chikitsa’ or treatment if one undertakes it with faith. There are many forms of treatment with names ending with ‘pathy’. Allopathy, Homoeopathy, Naturapathy, etc. are all different forms of treatment. So ‘Namapathy’ means the system of treatment in which one has to chant the ‘Divine Name’ with faith. The repetition of the Divine Name with faith has brought about several miraculous cures since time immemorial. One may choose any ‘mantra’ for this purpose. The most commonly chosen ‘mantras’ are ‘Aum Namo Narayanaya’, ‘Aum Namah Shivaya’, ‘Aum Namo Bhagavate Sivanandaya’, ‘Aum Sai Ram’, ‘Aum Shri Ram’, ‘Aum Namo Bhagavate Hanumantaya’, ‘Hail Mary Aum Jesus’ etc., but in ‘Pranava Chikitsa,’ the mantra chanted is “Aum”.
