Sutra behind the scenes exclusive… “No Problem”

This is one of the largest budgeted Bollywood movies for 2010.

Bollywood is not ready to take over Hollywood. After the great success of Slum Dog Mil-lionaire, Anil Kapoor is now producing this global production called “No Problem”.

THIS IS THE FIRST movie between Dr B.K. Modi (the chairman of the Spice Group and Spice Entertainment) and Anil Kapoor. The Indian film industry is now going global and producing this movie in various languages, including English, Spanish, Chinese, Italian, etc.

Modi stated that the war for eyeballs between Bollywood and Hollywood is now on!

Mr. Anil Kapoor said that the inspiration for this movie was from Mr. Anees Bazmee, who is currently Bollywood’s leading director. With chart-topping successes like ‘No Entry’ and ‘Welcome’, both of which starred Anil Kapoor, as well as the success of ‘Singh is Kingg’ 2009, Kapoor has full faith in and support for the skills of Mr. Bazmee as both a writer and director. When Bazmee introduced the script to Kapoor and Modi, they were both very excited and decided to co-produce this movie.

The initial discussions to take the movie on a global stage started after Modi hosted a party for Kapoor and the other cast at his residence in the US. At this stage Modi told Kapoor that he has to stop doing only Hindi movies, and stop being a star just for India. He now wants Kapoor to be a global player in the entertainment industry hence this movie is being done is such a manner. Kapoor is also starring in the US series ‘24’.

Modi said that although India produces fantastic, ‘Hindi movies’, it was time to expose the Indian movie makers, to broader global audiences hence these movies as well as the other movies that Spice Entertainment has invested in, are being made in Hindi as well as in English and other languages too.

India is one of the few secular countries in the world, in that it is broad in its thinking, it allows for all religions equally, with no particular preference for any specific one. On this basis India, as the home of great mysticism, heritage and culture, is an ideal platform to be a leading producer of a range of fantastic entertainment.

Importantly, the value system of India is almost always reflected in its productions, which is a leading edge over Hollywood. According to Modi, this movie too, although a comedy, has an underlying value message that will be imparted, that can be taken away from the movie after enjoying the fantastic entertainment.

This movie has been shot mainly in South Africa, with more than 65% of the movie being South African based. Modi and Kapoor do look forward to more support from South Africa and its government, for future productions in South Africa. Although the producers love the locations and exotic sets that are available in SA, currently there are no incentives for Bollywood producers to shoot in South Africa.

The cost of production in Bollywood is more than 5 times cheaper than productions in Hollywood, yet the final product is of an equivalent quality. The grand success of the award-winning ‘Slumdog Millionare ’ bears testament to this fact.

When asked about the impact of the global recession, Modi said that it has become a leading advantage for India producers. This is due to the fact that the US producers due to their huge budgets, that are on average $200-250 million, are finding it difficult to raise such a capital for productions. Many large budget Hollywood movies have not performed adequately and some have even incurred great losses. Yet the Bollywood productions that are costing about $10-15 million, are easily funded, with equally great production quality and unique content.

This production in South Africa has already contributed more than 2000-bed nights of revenue to the Cape Town hospitality industry, and many of the extras, and dancers are all South African. Mrs. Farad Dayal, who is a close associate of SUTRA, and was on set with the SUTRA team, got an exclusive a role in this movie, as the mother of one of the lead actors.

Essentially ‘No Problem’, is simply an entertainer, and a feel good movie, that will entertain viewers of all ages from the global community. The comedy genre is main focus as the producers feel, based on their experience that it will appeal to a larger global audience. Action and serious drama’s, are usually watched by a more select viewership, than comedy.

Kapoor noted that his Modi’s, aim was to help people be entertained whilst helping them temporarily escape the rush of their everyday lives’. We agree that people’s lives’ are already too full of drama, and seriousness, to want to pay to experience any more. People want to laugh and people want to be happy!

“People want to laugh and people want to be happy!”

All in all, South Africa is set to be a leading location for Bollywood movies, and we at SUTRA have let the Indian producers know that when it comes to getting support from South Africa it will be… “NO PROBLEM!”
